JUAN CASTRO BLANCO NATIONAL PARK

The park contains a wide variety of orchids and birds as well as natural hot springs. At least 57 species of mammal recorded in the reserve and include tapir, ocelots, sloths, howler monkeys, deer and at least 22 species of bats.
Over 233 species of birds, resident and migratory have been recorded including the national bird of Costa Rica the clay-coloured robin. Endangered species found on the park include the quetzal, curassow, red brocket deer, and black guan.
Juan Castro Blanco National Park itself features three volcanoes on site, including the Porvenir Volcano (7,438 feet), the Platanar Volcano (7,162 feet) and the El Viejo Volcano (6,962 feet). In addition to the breathtaking views created by these awe-inspiring landmarks, hot springs leading to rivers can be found throughout the park.
The national park’s large trail system spans more than 35,000 acres and gives travelers a chance to truly appreciate the flora and fauna of Costa Rica up close. Like many national parks in the country, Juan Castro Blanco National Park is an excellent place to view a diverse collection of wildlife, but in a very secluded setting.
Bird watchers can expect to see some of Costa Rica’s treasured species, including the resplendent quetzal. Peacocks, falcons and black turkeys can also be found throughout the park. Some of the mammals found in the park include a number of Costa Rica’s monkey species, armadillos and even goats. Travelers can also expect to see a variety of snakes, frogs and lizards.
